“The House of the Dead” was written by F. M. Dostoevsky based on his memories of imprisonment in the Omsk penal colony from 1850 to 1854. A death sentence for his participation in a revolutionary circle, commuted at the last moment to hard labor, time spent in shackles among criminals, and an intimate acquaintance with human agony and suffering caused a transformation in the writer's soul that influenced all of his subsequent work.
