Notes from the House of the Dead

"Notes from the Dead House" was written by Fyodor Dostoevsky based on his memories of his imprisonment in the Omsk katorga prison from 1850–1854. The death sentence for participation in a revolutionary circle, which was commuted to hard labor at the last moment, his time in shackles alongside criminals, and his close acquaintance with the torments and sufferings of people, brought about a revolution in the writer's soul, which was reflected in all his work.
