"War and Peace" by Leo Tolstoy is a book for all time. It seems as if it has always existed, so familiar does the text seem as soon as we open the first pages of the novel, and so memorable are many of its episodes: the hunt and Christmas carols, Natasha Rostova's first ball, a moonlit night in Otradnoye, Prince Andrei at the Battle of Austerlitz...
