William Crimsworth is young and poor. He feels alienated and unhappy in his office job, and a teaching position at an expensive boys' boarding school in Brussels seems like a welcome change of fortune. There, he will experience the difficult journey of growing up and undergoing a harsh "education of the senses"—from a youthful infatuation with a striking older woman to a deep, conscious feeling for a colleague, the aspiring teacher Frances Henri. However, this innocent "office romance" sparks anger and hostility in the sanctimonious atmosphere of the boarding school.
