Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930) was an English writer, physician, and author of adventure, historical, and fantasy works. His bibliography is quite extensive, and among his characters, Sherlock Holmes holds a special place. The investigations of the brilliant and eccentric detective were so popular with readers that Doyle's attempt to bring an end to the story caused unprecedented outrage among his fans. Arthur Conan Doyle created an intelligent, noble hero whose appeal remains undiminished to this day. His memorable image is complemented by new traits, and his biography by new details, but some things always remain constant: the apartment at 221B Baker Street, and his loyal friend and assistant, Dr. Watson.
