Everything in this book is pedagogically beneficial and artistically beautiful.
Firstly, it has a dynamic and instructive plot about a foolish rooster who fell for a fox's tricks three times and ended up in her paws. Luckily, his reliable friends, the cat and the thrush, rescued him from trouble each time.
Secondly, there's the magnificent Russian language and clear, child-friendly presentation of all the dramatic events in the fairy tale, rendered by Alexey Nikolaevich Tolstoy, a versatile writer and highly talented adapter of fairy tales.
Thirdly, there are the brilliant, one-of-a-kind illustrations by animal artist Evgeny Mikhailovich Rachov. Rachov's animals fully retain their natural plasticity. But because they are all dressed in Russian national costumes, walk and sit like people, and have the most varied expressions on their faces, one can easily discern hints of human characters and relationships in them. For example, the fox: you immediately see – she’s so affectionate, but don't expect any good from her – a brazen deceiver, a slyboots.
