The idea for "The Stronghold" originated with Theodore Dreiser as early as 1912. Considering the book to be incredibly significant and personal, the author struggled to achieve the perfection he desired. Rewriting the text over and over, he worked on the manuscript almost until his death. Ultimately, the novel was published only in 1946, several months after his death. Bank treasurer Solon Barnes was raised in a Quaker family—members of a radical Protestant movement. Having adopted his father's strict religious views, Solon attempts to raise his own children with similar strictness. However, the new generation no longer wishes to live by the precepts of their ancestors, preferring to seek their own path in life.
