Greg Heffley is a high school student, and his life isn't easy. He's called to the board on the very day he... well, missed something. And during recess and after school, he's surrounded by tall, scary, and mean older boys. Girls giggle at him and notice even the tiniest pimple behind his ear. No one understands how hard Greg's life is: not his parents, not his close friends.
When Greg's friend Rowley suddenly becomes popular, Greg tries to exploit his popularity for his own gain. However, Greg's actions unwittingly trigger a chain of events that will test the boys' friendship.
